Shear and Moment DiagramsDrawing the diagrams and solved problems
Internal forces are the bending moment, shear force, and axial force at a section of a member. In a determinate structure, equilibrium gives the support reactions. The structure is then cut at the section of interest, and equilibrium is written for one side of the cut.
This is the foundation of structural analysis. The final diagrams of the indeterminate methods are drawn the same way, from the reactions and end moments.
Solution steps
- Compare the unknowns with the equations; split the structure at any hinge.
- Find the reactions, starting with a moment equation.
- Divide the members into regions; a new region starts wherever the load or section changes.
- Write M and V for each region; under a distributed load, the largest moment is where the shear is zero.
- Check with joint equilibrium and with zero moment at free ends.

Solve your own structure in YapSat
YapSat writes the solution steps for this topic for the structures you draw, too. It solves beams and frames step by step by moment distribution, slope deflection, the force method, and the stiffness method, and also handles trusses, arches, influence lines, and deflections. It's free and needs no account.
